چکیده

This paper presents a system named ChordSequenceFactory for automatically generating chord arrangements. A key element of musical composition is the arrangement of chord sequences because good chord arrangements have the potential to enrich the listening experience and create a pleasant feeling of surprise by borrowing elements from different musical styles in unexpected ways. While chord sequences have conventionally been modeled by using Ngrams, generative grammars, or music theoretic rules, our system decomposes a matrix consisting of chord transition probabilities by using nonnegative matrix factorization. This enables us to not only generate chord sequences from scratch but also transfer characteristic transition patterns from one chord sequence to another. ChordSequenceFactory can assist users to edit chord sequences by modifying factorized chord transition probabilities and then automatically re-arranging them. By leveraging knowledge from chord sequences of over 2000 songs, our system can help users generate a wide range of musically interesting and entertaining chord arrangements.

Chord Recognition using Instrument Voicing Constraints

This paper presents a technique of disambiguation for chord recognition based on a-priori knowledge of probabilities of chord voicings in the specific musical medium. The main motivating example is guitar chord recognition, where the physical layout and structure of the instrument, along with human physical and temporal constraints, make certain chord voicings and chord sequences more likely th...

Following a Musical Performance from a Partially Specified Score

This paper describes a system that maps a musical performance, recorded as MIDI, onto a partially specified score (lead sheet). Our system breaks the performance into appropriate segments for hypothesized chords by representing it as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) whose edges represent time-intervals of the music. The highest-reward path through the DAG corresponds to the best segmentation of t...

A Vocabulary-Free Infinity-Gram Model for Nonparametric Bayesian Chord Progression Analysis

This paper presents probabilistic n-gram models for symbolic chord sequences. To overcome the fundamental limitations in conventional models—that the model optimality is not guaranteed, that the value of n is fixed uniquely, and that a vocabulary of chord types (e.g., major, minor, · · · ) is defined in an arbitrary way—we propose a vocabulary-free infinity-gram model based on Bayesian nonparam...

TAC: A Topology-Aware Chord-based Peer-to-Peer Network

Among structured Peer-to-Peer systems, Chord has a general popularity due to its salient features like simplicity, high scalability, small path length with respect to network size, and flexibility on node join and departure. However, Chord doesn’t take into account the topology of underlying physical network when a new node is being added to the system, thus resulting in high routing late...

Computer Analysis of Jazz Chord Sequences : Is Solar a Blues ? in Readings in Music

This chapter investigates the issue of the role of the computer in musical analysis. Starting with a survey of the main approaches in computer analysis, we focus on the particular problem of Jazz chord sequences harmonic analysis. We propose a theory of chord sequence analysis, based on an explicit conceptual hierarchy of analysis objects. We discuss the implementation of the theory and its res...
